Starting school always comes with excitement, nerves, and about a hundred questions. Luckily, you’re not expected to figure it out on your own.

At Թ Global, every new student is assigned a dedicated success counselor to help navigate the twists and turns of studying 100% online. Թ Global was designed specifically for working adults, military learners, and other nontraditional students who need flexibility without sacrificing academic quality. The structure—accelerated eight-week courses, monthly start dates, and fully asynchronous classes—makes it easier to fit school into a busy life.

But for many students, that same flexibility can be a challenge, especially if it’s different from how they’ve studied in the past.

“Adding school to an already busy schedule can be overwhelming at first, but with a little preparation, there are ways to make this transition so much smoother,” said Mandy Stephens, Lead Student Success Counselor. “Outside of instructors and the material you are learning each term changing, there are a lot of similarities course to course, and that helps you get into a rhythm for future courses.”

We asked several success counselors to share their top tips for starting strong and staying successful. Their advice is grounded in years of experience supporting adults who are balancing education with full, busy lives.

1. Create a study plan before classes begin.

Having a plan makes it easier to stay on track from the very beginning.

“You know the old saying, ‘Failing to plan is planning to fail,’” said Jenny Ruger, Lead Student Success Counselor. “Students need to plan anywhere from 10 to 15 hours per week per course. Do you prefer to complete school work in small chunks throughout the week, or do you like to grind it all out in two or three days? Think about what might work best for you and schedule it out.”

Another part of time management is understanding when you’re at your best and scheduling your schoolwork time then.

Student Success Counselor II Stephanie Cook recommends looking at your week in advance and blocking off time for coursework. “Think about your current schedule. What times and days of the week can you incorporate studying and working on assignments? Maybe Wednesdays are devoted to your weekly discussion board posts. Figure out what works for your schedule and stick to it.”

Cook provided a helpful list for planning how you approach school tasks—not just when to do them. These strategies can make your study time more focused and productive:

  • Use highlighting techniques during your readings to stay engaged and identify key points.
  • Break your readings into sections so you can take short, energizing breaks.
  • Draft your writing in Word or Google Docs before uploading to Canvas—this makes editing and saving easier.
  • Use helpful tools while writing, like the APA guides available in the Թ Global Library for critical thinking assignments.
  • After submitting your initial discussion post, set a calendar reminder to return later in the week and respond to two classmates.

Molly Scharping, Senior Student Success Counselor, added that planning is also about reducing stress. “Take some time before the term begins to map out your weekly schedule. Include deadlines, work hours, family responsibilities, and time for studying. Planning ahead gives you a clear picture of what to expect and helps prevent last-minute stress.”

2. Stay flexible and take it one week at a time.

Plans are helpful, but life happens.

Թ Global’s flexible late policy is designed with real life in mind. Many students are balancing full-time jobs, parenting, or other responsibilities, and sometimes things don’t go according to plan.

“Life throws us curveballs, but don’t worry—we got you!” Ruger said. She encourages students to review the academic late policy so they know what to expect in the event of an unexpected situation.

Cook suggests using Canvas to narrow your focus. “Use the Modules tab in Canvas,” she said. “Think of each module as each week of the term and only focus on what each module entails for that current week. Before you know it, you’ll be in week eight!”

Scharping encourages students not to panic if things don’t go perfectly. “Life is unpredictable—and that’s okay! Your study plan is a guide, not a rulebook. Progress, not perfection, is what counts.”

3. Make the most of your success counselor.

Your success counselor is more than a point of contact—they’re your go-to support system throughout your academic journey.

“It’s literally our job to help you thrive and navigate your academic journey,” said Jennifer Washicosky, Senior Student Success Counselor II. “Success counselors can co-create an academic plan with you and connect you with the resources you need to succeed.”

Scharping noted that it’s best not to wait until you’re overwhelmed. Success counselors can help with more than academics, including time management, study strategies, and navigating Թ Global’s many student resources. A quick check-in, even when things are going well, can help you stay on track. Counselor contact information is located at the top left of the student portal, Cook noted.

Ruger emphasized that success counselors are available for everything from troubleshooting to celebrating wins. “Your success counselor is here to support you, guide you and be a source of information,” she said. “Falling behind? Contact your success counselor. Not sure if you should change majors? Contact your success counselor. Don’t know where to find your degree requirements? Contact your success counselor. Want to celebrate a passing grade? Contact your success counselor. We are virtually a one-stop shop!”

4. Connect with your instructors.

Online doesn’t mean unreachable.

“Instructors want you to succeed,” Scharping said. “Reach out early if you’re confused or just want to introduce yourself. Most are happy to offer clarification or tips.”

Even though online, the classroom is a place to connect with your classmates and Instructor. Instructors are active and posting in class throughout the week, from weekly announcements to interacting on discussion boards and providing valuable feedback on written assignments.

“Instructors don’t work a typical Monday through Friday 9-to-5 schedule,” Stephens said. “They’re available nights and weekends and are happy to connect via phone, text, email, and even Zoom.”

Ruger noted that instructors typically list their contact information, including office hours, in the announcements section of each course. Washicosky added that many respond quickly and are available during weekly office hours—resources students are encouraged to use.

5. Know your resources—and use them.

Թ Global offers a wide range of academic and career support tools, all included with your tuition.

“Writing Center consultations, résumé reviews, tutoring, library research help, career coaching—it’s all free,” Ruger said. “Ask your success counselor if you’re not sure where to start.”

Cook refers students to their portal to find the tools. “Check the bottom left of your homepage. These resources are incredibly helpful when you’re working on assignments or need extra support.”

Washicosky encouraged students to take time early in the term to explore what’s available so they’re not scrambling later.

6. Pace yourself and focus on what you can do this week.

Balance and consistency matter more than perfection.

“You’re not a robot – and you don’t need to study nonstop to succeed,” said Scharping. “Incorporating regular breaks, time for hobbies, and adequate sleep actually improves your ability to focus and retain information. Balance is key to long-term academic and personal success.”

Scharping added that breaking large goals into smaller tasks can help them feel more manageable.

Washicosky recommends short breaks every hour to reset and refocus. “Five to 15 minutes every hour makes a difference. Get up, stretch, walk around, or grab a snack to reset.”

She also encourages students to track their progress week by week. “Think of your progress in chapters. If you keep showing up each week, the finish line will come into view.”

You don’t need to have it all figured out on day one. At Թ Global, you have a team behind you—from instructors to success counselors—ready to support your goals. Take it one week at a time, use the tools available to you, and stay focused on your progress. The path may look different for everyone, but you’re not walking it alone.

Թ Global wasn’t built for dorm life and dining halls. It was built for military learners and working adults who are juggling real responsibilities and don’t have time to waste. From the start, the university has focused on flexibility, offering fully online programs that fit around deployments, duty schedules, and life’s curveballs.

It’s one reason Թ Global was ranked the No. 4 Best Online Bachelor’s Program for Veterans in 2024 by U.S. News & World Report — and the top-ranked Colorado institution in that category.

“From special tuition rates to accepting military service as college credit, Թ Global follows the VA Principles of Excellence to make military-affiliated attendance as seamless, supportive, and rewarding as possible—whether you’re active duty, a veteran, or a military spouse planning for what’s next,” said Audra Spicer, provost and chief academic officer at Թ Global.

Here are three ways online learning works to your advantage:

1. Earn credits on your schedule — one 8-week class at a time

Թ Global offers 8-week courses with monthly start dates, allowing you to earn credits in short, manageable sessions. Whether you’re working long shifts or stationed overseas, you can study when and where it works for you.

You’ll also find yourself in similar company. Unlike traditional four-year universities, most of our students are balancing work, family, and life transitions:

  • 57% are between the ages of 25 and 39
  • 25% are age 40 or older
  • Fewer than 1% are under age 18

You won’t feel out of place — because you won’t be. Թ Global’s online environment is designed for adult learners who are focused, experienced, and committed to taking their education seriously.

2. Choose programs that align with your goals

In today’s economy, where artificial intelligence is reshaping entry-level roles and raising the bar for people-powered jobs, it’s more important than ever to upskill, reskill, and stay ready for what’s next. Whatever your next career goal may be, you’ll want to make sure the program you choose is cutting-edge.

“Military-affiliated students come to the University with a wealth of life experience, training, and existing education, and learning how to apply AI workplace skills to what they already know can take them to the next level in their careers,” said Spicer. “Թ Global offers degrees, certificates, and industry-recognized certifications in AI and machine learning, as well as areas of specialization and industry-recognized qualifications that pair perfectly with the attainments that military-affiliated students have and can use to excel in the next chapter of their work lives.”

Many military students seek career-focused education that they can apply immediately or build upon to earn a larger degree. Թ Global offers shorter undergraduate certificate programs, typically 18 credits in length. They provide targeted skills for immediate applicability at work and are stackable toward a bachelor’s degree.

Popular options include:

3. Get credit for what you’ve already achieved

Թ Global has a generous transfer-credit policy, with the average undergraduate student transferring in more than 50 credits.

That generosity extends to military applicants, who bring valuable experience to their education. From technical skills to leadership training, your service may qualify for academic credit. Թ Global’s external credit review process and transfer-friendly policies help ensure your experience counts, allowing you to skip what you already know and move ahead faster.

From being able to take short, focused courses to making sure you’re well-prepared for workforce evolution to not spending time taking courses for skills you’ve already mastered, online learning can be a smart choice for those in the military who want to catapult to their next position within or outside of the military.

If you’ve completed—or are close to completing—an associate’s degree from a Colorado community college, you may be closer than you think to earning your bachelor’s. And you don’t need to relocate, give up your job, or pause your life to do it.

Թ Global, the state’s only 100% online public university, is designed to avoid common roadblocks that often keep students from finishing their degrees. Here’s how Թ Global makes the process easier for Colorado community college graduates:

  1. All 60 credits accepted with guaranteed admission. Students who complete an Associate of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree at a Colorado community college are guaranteed admission, and all 60 credits transfer directly into a bachelor’s program at Թ Global.
  2. A 10% tuition discount that sticks with you through graduation. Graduates from Colorado community colleges automatically qualify for a 10% tuition discount that stays in place through graduation, as long as they remain continuously enrolled.
  3. Locked-in tuition rates: Tuition is guaranteed to stay the same throughout one’s program, making it easier for students to plan and budget. At $375 per undergraduate credit (before the 10% discount), Թ Global’s rates are competitively priced compared to other universities.
  4. Colorado Promise: Tuition reimbursement available. Colorado students with a family income of $90,000 or less may have their tuition and fees fully reimbursed through the refundable tax credit. To qualify, students must enroll in a Colorado public college within two years of high school graduation, complete the FAFSA or CASFA, take at least six credits per term, and maintain a 2.5 GPA.
  5. Application fee waiver for Colorado residents. Colorado residents can waive the $25 application fee by entering the code “COLORADO” when submitting their application.
  6. A proven model for working adults. Ninety-two percent of undergrads are employed, and 83% stay enrolled—clear evidence that Թ Global’s flexible, 8-week asynchronous courses make it possible to balance work, life, and school while staying on track to graduate.
  7. No geographic restrictions. Whether students stay in Colorado or relocate out of state, they can continue their studies without interruption and keep their tuition rate with no out-of-state fees. Թ Global’s fully online model supports anytime, anywhere access.
  8. Industry-relevant curriculum. As students complete certain courses in their bachelor’s program, they become eligible to take a range of industry-recognized certification exams, giving them credentials that show employers they’ve mastered in-demand skills and are ready to contribute on day one.
  9. Programs built for today’s job market. In addition to high-return degrees in fields like business management, accounting, and criminal justice, Թ Global has expanded its bachelor’s program offerings to include degrees in operations and supply chain management and legal studies—fields aligned with growing career opportunities.
  10. Personalized support every step of the way. Students can access free 1-on-1 tutoring and a dedicated student success counselor to help with class planning, financial aid questions, and staying on track to graduation.

For Colorado community college graduates, Թ Global offers a clear and accessible path to a bachelor’s degree. With guaranteed credit transfer, competitive tuition, and a fully online format, the university is built to support students as they continue their education alongside work, family, and other responsibilities.

With warmer days and sunnier skies on the horizon, it’s easy for students to lose focus on their coursework. Longer daylight hours, spring break schedules, and the temptation to spend more time outside can make it harder to stay on track. But staying motivated doesn’t mean sacrificing the season—you can embrace the energy of spring while keeping your academic momentum strong.

To help, student success counselors at Թ Global shared their top tips for staying on track this spring.

1. Get outside. There’s no rule that you have to study indoors

One of the biggest perks of online learning is that you’re not tied to a classroom—so why not take advantage of the spring weather? Whether it’s reading on your porch, watching lectures in a park, or working from a café patio, a change of scenery can boost your mood and productivity.

“You don’t have to be confined inside four walls to complete your assignments,” said Jenny Ruger, Senior Student Success Counselor II. “Being outside brings a different energy and allows you to enjoy the nicer weather as the seasons change.”

If you want to make it extra enjoyable, Stephanie Cook, Student Success Counselor II, recommended bringing along some comforts. “Grab your favorite blanket and snack and soak up the fresh air while reading or working on assignments!”

2. “Spring clean” your schedule

Spring often brings new commitments—kids on spring break, longer daylight hours, or changing work schedules—so it’s important to reassess your study habits and adjust accordingly.

Cook emphasized staying organized. “Keep routines consistent,” she said. “Make sure your assignment trackers, calendars, and agendas are up to date to stay organized and on track to the finish line!”

As the seasons change, so do your daily rhythms. If you find yourself with more energy in the evenings, consider shifting study sessions to later in the day so you can make the most of daylight hours for family time or outdoor activities.

The extra daylight in the evening could potentially boost your energy level,” Ruger said. “Be sure to capitalize on the renewed sense of energy and shift coursework to later in the evening so you can spend time outside earlier with family and friends.”

3. Stay organized with assignment trackers

A little planning went a long way when it came to academic success. Reviewing your module overview before each school week could help you stay prepared, and keeping an assignment tracker can help ensure deadlines don’t sneak up on you.

“Keeping an assignment tracker each term is beneficial for most students,” said Jessica Burks, Student Success Counselor II. “If you don’t have one for the spring trimester, reach out to your Student Success Counselor, who can walk you through using one.”

4. Try audio learning while you’re on the go

If you’re juggling a busy schedule, audio learning can help you absorb material without being tied to a screen. Whether it’s audiobooks, text-to-speech programs, or recorded lectures, you can learn while walking, commuting, or doing household tasks.

“Students have access to a resource called SensusAccess in their portal that allows them to convert most PDFs and Word documents into an audio file,” said Ruger. “Some RedShelf textbooks even offer an audio version within the e-book rental. Get creative with completing tasks! No laptop? No problem! You can use the Canvas app on your phone to complete readings, watch videos and take notes while on the go.”

5. Stay motivated with small wins

Spring can bring renewed energy, but it can also bring distractions. One way to keep pushing forward is by celebrating the progress you’ve already made.

“Thinking about all the courses you’ve already completed and how you’re getting closer and closer to the finish line can be the motivation you need,” said Cook. “You got this!”

Taking time to reflect on your long-term goals can also help keep you grounded when life gets busy.

“Stay motivated by keeping your overall goal in sight and taking time to recognize the progress you’ve already made,” said Amanda Stephens, Senior Student Success Counselor II. “Every completed assignment, every passed course—it all adds up. Don’t be afraid to celebrate your successes, big or small, and if you ever need a boost or someone to help you stay on track, your student success counselor is always here to support you.”

For students who need an extra push, setting up small incentives can be a helpful tactic.

“Implementing a reward system or a study incentive is a great way to stay on track,” said Jennifer Washicosky, Senior Student Success Counselor. “Scheduling a walk or dinner post-study can motivate students and help manage distractions. Springtime distractions are inevitable, but we can use them to our advantage.”

6. Prioritize sleep to keep your brain sharp

With longer daylight hours, it was tempting to stay up later and pack more into your day—but proper rest is crucial for academic success.

“Prioritize sleep,” Burks said. “When daylight lasts longer, our bodies are geared to push to get more activities done. Setting a realistic and consistent wind-down time, screen-free, can set you up for successful sleep which promotes more brain power for studies.”

Good sleep habits help with concentration, memory retention, and overall well-being, so making rest a priority is essential for academic success.

7. Use timed study sessions for better focus

If you’ve ever found yourself losing track of time while studying, using a timer can help you stay focused and productive without burning out.

One popular method is the Pomodoro technique, which involves working in 25-minute blocks followed by short breaks. This approach helps maintain concentration and gives your brain time to recharge.

“Giving yourself an allotted amount of time to complete an assignment or read a certain amount is a great way to stay focused,” said Cook. “Then, at the end of that timeframe, setting a timer for a few minutes to get up and stretch helps keep students refreshed.”

Balancing coursework with the energy of spring doesn’t have to be a challenge. By making small adjustments—like studying outside, using flexible resources, staying organized, and setting up a study reward system—you can enjoy the season while staying focused on your goals.

And if you ever need extra support, your student success counselors are always here to help.

If you’ve recently experienced a government layoff, it can feel overwhelming to figure out your next steps. After handling the essential administrative tasks—like understanding your layoff terms, assessing your financial situation, and exploring benefits and health insurance options—you might be wondering what to do next. Here are five steps to consider:

1. Leverage Թ Global’s career resources

Current students and alumni of Թ Global should utilize our unique platform, , offered through Career Development Services. If you want to remain employed by the federal government, consider . Priority Placement Programs are available to individuals working in the Department of Defense (DoD) and put qualifying individuals on a reemployment priority list.

3. Update your résumé for civilian jobs

If you are not interested in continuing to work for the federal government, it’s important to create a résumé tailored to the civilian sector. Using a federal résumé will likely disqualify you from consideration, as the format may not align with what certain organizations or industries require.

For example, a is often four to five pages in length, while a is typically one to two pages. offers program-specific examples of resumes that are applicant tracking system (ATS) compliant. Without an ATS-compliant résumé, it is unlikely that your résumé will reach a recruiter. Check out for tips on how to make your résumé ATS-compliant.

4. Start your job search with the right platforms

Applying for jobs isn’t as complex as it once was. For example, if you have a profile, you can make your profile available to recruiters. Furthermore, making yourself “Open to Work” lets individuals see that you are seeking employment.

There are many platforms that you can explore for employment opportunities. Adam I. Stamper’s article, recommends these as some of the best job search websites:

  • CareerBuilder
  • Glassdoor
  • Indeed
  • LinkedIn
  • LinkUp

Remote opportunities are highly coveted, and competition is fierce. Since 2023, there has been a decline in fully remote employment opportunities. Therefore, being flexible regarding your working schedule—whether in the office, hybrid, or remote—is often best. Here are that help you find legitimate remote jobs:

  • FlexJobs
  • Just Remote
  • Indeed
  • Remote.com
  • Remote OK
  • We Work Remotely
  • ZipRecruiter

If you want to work in public service but don’t want to stay in the federal sector, consider exploring state and local government jobs. Various governors across the United States have committed to prioritizing the hiring of federal workers. In fact, , “The federal government might say, ‘You’re fired,’ but here in New York, we say, ‘You’re hired.’”

Many of the skills acquired during federal employment are transferable to roles in state and local government. It’s also important to recognize that private companies often Your federal experiences and competencies are desired by organizations.

During times of economic hardship, flexibility is key. Although not always ideal, gig work, freelancing, or consulting can help supplement your income until you secure a full-time position.

5. Enhance your skills and education

During challenging economic times, it’s beneficial to assess your goals. While a layoff, termination, or bear market can cause significant anxiety, there is hope ahead.

Now is the time to consider what matters to you. Do you hope to earn a higher-level degree? Do you want to obtain a certification in an industry or field you’re passionate about? Do you see merit in obtaining a specialization to enhance your credibility when applying for future roles?

Whatever your reasoning, Թ Global offers various educational opportunities that are student-centered and career-minded, from bachelor’s to master’s degrees and both undergraduate and graduate certifications. They’re designed to align with industry demands, giving you the tools you need to stay competitive in the job market.

While it’s understandable to feel upset, dismayed, or anxious about your layoff—or even the possibility of being laid off—it’s important to recognize that there are options available to you.

In my years of career coaching, I have noticed that individuals often become so dismayed about past experiences that they forget to look toward the exciting future. While you might not land your dream role immediately—and may need to apply to numerous positions and go through various interviews—there is a bright future ahead.

Vanessa Ann Claus, Ph.D., is a Lead Faculty Associate for the Human Resource Management programs.

Whether you’re a federal, state or local government employee, this period of political transition—between the Biden and Trump administrations—may bring feelings of anxiety, frustration, uncertainty or even cautious optimism. Many federal workers head into the office each day wondering, “Will I have a job tomorrow?” While those feelings are completely valid, it’s still important to stay proactive in your job search—even if that search isn’t urgent just yet.

As of February 2025, about 23.6 million Americans were employed in the government sector, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In a November 2024 report, the found that the federal government employed just over 3 million people—about 1.87% of the entire civilian workforce. The impact is even more concentrated in Washington, D.C., where reports that 43.3% of residents are employed by the federal government.

Unfortunately, regardless of sector, individuals are replaceable. While it is wonderful to work for a company that is loyal to its employees—from the beginning of their careers to retirement—this loyalty is uncommon. of the World Economic Forum noted, “American adults have held down an average of 12 [jobs] by the time they’re 55. But now we’re entering an era in which most of us won’t just have one career, but many.”

That’s why it’s wise to always be passively looking for new opportunities, even if you’re currently satisfied with your role. What’s the harm in looking? Nothing. Why is it beneficial to explore what’s available? Because things change… Consider the announcement made below.

On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, the Education Secretary announced a projected to impact approximately 50% of the Department of Education’s workforce. Regardless of how one feels about these cuts, it’s important to recognize that workforce reductions at various levels of government are happening—and more are likely on the way.

As reported in “On paper, the big deadline is Thursday [March 13, 2025] for agencies to submit plans for large-scale layoffs, called a reduction in force. But agencies have been getting those plans in early, and telling employees ahead of that deadline that their jobs are about to expire.”

Therefore, even during periods of anger, stress, frustration, anticipation, excitement, and more, you might be thinking, “What can I do now?” Like many individuals who are laid off or foresee a layoff coming, you might just be trying to make it through the day, which is understandable. To assist you in this challenging period, I have created five immediate action points:

1. Remember that you are valued.

Many of us take great pride in our work. We remain passionate about what we do, how we contribute to our organizations, and we value the work that we do each day. No matter what happens, don’t forget your value. Your self-worth/value does not lie only in your career. People get self-worth from a variety of sources… If your only sense of value is in one aspect of your life, it’s time to do some brainstorming about other areas of self-worth. Your entire existence shouldn’t be wrapped up in your career. Your career is only a portion of who you are.

There are so many emotional, physical, and spiritual impacts of being laid off. has created various coping strategies to handle layoffs, which include: (1) taking care of your body, (2) nurturing yourself, (3) maintaining supportive relationships, (4) trying to keep a positive mental attitude, and (5) writing to express feelings, emotions, goals, and more.

Shutting yourself away from the world and wallowing in your emotions is acceptable for a few days, but this is merely a temporary solution (which never works and is not productive). As Helen Keller stated, “When one door of happiness closes another one opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has been opened for us.” There’s a bright future ahead… Let’s focus on the doors that will soon be opening for you.

2. Do not sign anything

If you have been laid off, it’s critical to read the terms and conditions of your layoff. My best HR advice to you is that you do not sign anything until you have a comprehensive understanding of what you are signing. In my days working in various HR departments, unfortunately, I have seen organizations take advantage of employees (even during the most difficult periods in their lives). I have witnessed employees being coerced into signing documents about their layoffs before they leave the office.

DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SIGNING!

If an organization lays you off, terminates your employment, etc., you owe nothing to that organization (in terms of signing documents by the end of the day). You need to protect yourself! Therefore, take time and, if necessary, seek outside legal counsel/support to understand your effective layoff date, severance offerings, re-hiring eligibility, and unemployment compensation options. You’ll want to understand your state’s

Did you know that you can negotiate your layoff package? Most people don’t. While this negotiation opportunity might not be an option at the federal level, presently, it’s still something worth exploring. Check out this resource for more information about how to negotiate your layoff/severance package.

3. Review your financial situation

Most of the U.S. population “works to live” rather than “lives to work.” Therefore, understanding how long your emergency fund (if you have one) might last, how far your severance pay will go, and what your ideal budget will be is essential. During points of financial strain, it is beneficial to reach out to lenders (if applicable) to determine if they will work with you on a deferred payment schedule or have hardship programs that can assist you. For tips about managing debts during layoffs/periods of career transition, .

4. Apply for unemployment compensation

Whether you are laid off or furloughed, you might qualify for unemployment benefits. As a laid-off federal employee, you are eligible for unemployment compensation. The United States Department of Labor provides a detailed breakdown of the on its website.

If you’d like to learn more about how to apply for state and local unemployment compensation benefits, please check out . For future reference, during governmental shutdowns, as a current federal employee, you also might be eligible for unemployment compensation.

Unemployment can take some time to process. In fact, the notes that the time for processing unemployment claims typically ranges from one to three weeks. The same timeframe is often true at the federal level. Therefore, don’t expect unemployment compensation to be dispersed immediately.

5. Review your health insurance options

Medical debt remains a widespread issue in the United States. About 14 million adults — or 6% of the population — owe more than $1,000 in medical debt, and roughly 3 million people owe more than $10,000, according to a by KFF, a nonprofit health policy group. One way to reduce the likelihood of falling into medical debt is to maintain health coverage, even during periods of unemployment.

If you have lost your job with the federal government, you will likely lose access to your federal health benefits after a specific period. Understanding when your benefits end is essential. It is critical to ensure your federal health benefits don’t lapse before you are insured again. Please consider obtaining additional coverage through the , the , or through your spouse’s or partner’s plan.

You might be thinking, “My spouse’s insurance enrollment period just ended…” Don’t worry. A job loss is a qualifying event that allows for immediate healthcare enrollment despite the open enrollment timeframe closing. For information about other qualifying events, .

Completing the tasks can be a feat in itself. In the next article, Part 2, I will cover the job search process for those who have recently been laid off. In the interim, while you work through this process, remember to show yourself grace. And if you’re a student at Թ Global, know that you have access to a variety of support services—including Career Development Services, counseling services, academic advising, and more—to help you navigate what’s next.

This is two-part article. You can read part two here.

Industries are shifting fast, and job security isn’t what it used to be. If you’re rethinking your career—whether due to a layoff, an unstable job market, or just the need for something more solid—project management is worth a look. It’s a field that spans industries, values experience, and rewards strong leadership.

Թ Global’s 100% online project management programs are designed for working professionals who need flexibility in their schedules. Undergraduate and graduate certificates can be completed in as little as 4-6 months, with courses aligned to the PMI Body of Knowledge to help prepare you for the PMP Certification exam.

In this Q&A, Susan Weese, DM, PgMP, PMP, Program Manager for Project, Operations, and Construction Management at Թ Global, shares insights on the core skills every project manager needs and how education can open new career opportunities.

Q: How can earning a project management degree or certification impact someone’s career? What doors can it open, and is it a worthwhile investment for seasoned professionals?

A: Many, if not most, project management theories were derived or borrowed from existing management theories or from theories found in other disciplines, such as leadership, engineering, quality, and operations. From a practice perspective, becoming an expert in project management requires a lot of time managing projects and learning from your experiences on the job. Project management is very much a contact sport, and its practitioners need to get out on the field and play. Effective project managers apply and integrate a plethora of skills and knowledge to plan and manage project work and deliver the defined and agreed-upon project outcome.

Earning an undergraduate or graduate degree, specialization, or certificate in project management at Թ Global provides both new and experienced project managers with the knowledge, tools, and skills to bring to their careers and to their project teams and stakeholders. It can be easy for project managers to get lost in the knowledge and forget that their end goal is to take that knowledge and make it work on their projects. All our project management programs focus on taking the wealth of project management that is out there and teaching our students how to customize and use what they know on their projects back at work. Թ Global’s project management program has been accredited by PMI GAC since 2017, which provides assurance to students and their employers about the quality, reputation, and relevance of their project management education from Թ Global and our program. After earning a general project management credential like the PMP, professionals can specialize further by pursuing certifications such as the PMI-ACP, which validates expertise in agile principles and practices.

“Project management is very much a contact sport, and its practitioners need to get out on the field and play.”
– Susan Weese, DM, PgMP, PMP

Q: What are the core skills every project manager should have, regardless of industry? Are there universal skills that form the foundation of effective project management?

A: Project managers wear many hats and juggle many roles across the project life cycle. In my experience, project managers with a balanced set of competencies across knowledge, performance, and interpersonal skills tend to excel in their roles. If a project manager has a good balance of skills, tools, and techniques, they should be able to manage a well-defined project effectively. In many organizations, the project manager works as the project management expert, facilitator, and enabler for their team versus being a technical worker on that team or directing the work for the team. I think this is very much the modern view of project management, which makes being a project manager a potentially great job.

Effective project managers are also experts at balancing the leadership and management aspects of a successful project manager. They can’t lose sight of the strategic vision and the business aspect of a project, yet they can’t get so lost in the vision that they render themselves ineffective at getting the job done in the day-to-day work world.

My favorite view of the required set of project manager competencies or core skills comes from the Project Management Institute and their 2017 Competency Development Framework, 3rd edition. PMI’s competency development framework breaks down the role into three areas: knowledge, performance, and personal skills. Knowledge competence focuses on the project manager’s knowledge of the project management discipline and the tools, techniques, and processes used to manage projects. Performance competence focuses on the practical experience of doing the project manager’s job with the full complement of project variables, including the defined project scope, the agreed-upon project budget, the project schedule, external vendors in the mix, project risks, project issues, and a plethora of project stakeholders to manage. PMI breaks down personal competencies into six specific categories: communicating, leading, managing, critical thinking, being practical, and acting professionally.

Q: What advice do you have for someone considering a career shift into project management? How can they prepare, and what steps should they take to get started?

A: Project management is an art and a science for its practitioners as they strive to meet project requirements to deliver a defined and agreed-upon project outcome. The science of project management is a contact sport of skills, knowledge, experience, tools, and technologies combined with technical and business expertise. The art of project management is all about people, focusing on engaging, involving, and influencing the stakeholders involved with the project team working completing the agreed upon scope of project work. Together, the art and science of project management target meeting the project requirements and delivering the defined project outcome within the project constraints of time, cost, quality, and scope.

I always think of project managers as the herding dogs of the organization, keeping everyone on track as the team heads towards a common project goal. Does this sound like something you might be interested in? Getting started in project management might involve trying the role of a project manager on for size, perhaps in a person’s current organization or at a local nonprofit where they volunteer their time. Take an introductory project management class and see what you think about the discipline and the work you would be doing. Attend a local PMI chapter meeting to network and ask the folks there about what they do as project managers in their workplace. There are many ways to test the waters and see what you think.

If you’re facing career uncertainty, project management is a solid potential next step. It’s a field that values leadership, problem-solving, and adaptability—skills that transfer across industries and stand the test of time.

Many students aim to bring their previously earned credits to Թ Global, saving time and money on their degrees. On average, students transfer more than 50 credits from community colleges, other universities, or alternative credit programs like Sophia Learning, StraighterLine, and Study.com.

Cindy Witmer, the university’s transfer evaluation manager, explains how Թ Global evaluates transcripts and helps students make the most of their prior academic work. Her insights shed light on the credit transfer process that streamlines the path to graduation for many students.

How does the transfer credit process work at Թ Global, and what should students know before starting?

When a student applies to attend Թ Global, the official transcripts provided are reviewed for possible transfer credit; a line-by-line evaluation of each transcript is completed. Each individual course is reviewed for possible transfer to Թ Global as a General Education course, major course, or elective course. The Transfer Evaluation team uses a national database to review course descriptions from the institution attended to determine the transferability of a course. When a course description is not available, a syllabus will be requested that the student can provide for further review.

What’s unique about Թ Global’s transfer credit policies compared to other universities?

Թ Global has a very generous transfer credit policy; students can transfer up to 90 credits toward their bachelor’s program and up to 50% of their master’s program. For bachelor students, there are many alternative credit options for earning General Education and elective credits, making completing a bachelor’s degree more cost-effective and decreasing the time needed to earn a bachelor’s degree.

For a program with a 30-credit major, a student could transfer in all 31 General Education requirements and 59 elective credits and only need to complete 30 major credits at Թ Global. Every program has different major requirements; the required electives will vary depending on the program. Elective requirements can range from 59 to 26; the fewer electives needed means more credits are required in the major.

How does Թ Global convert quarter system credits to semester credits, and what should students know about how this affects their degree progress?

If a student attended a quarter-credit school, Թ Global converts those to semester credits. Typically, a quarter is 10 weeks versus a 15-week semester; therefore, a 3-quarter credit class is a 2-semester hour class due to the amount of time a student spends in that course. Թ Global utilizes a formula to convert quarter credits to semester credits, which the majority of schools also use, so there is nothing specific to Թ Global.

Can a student get a transfer credit evaluation or an idea ahead of time how many credits will transfer before they’re formally admitted?

Yes, a student can work with an Enrollment Counselor to have a Transfer Estimate completed prior to enrolling at Թ Global. This is an estimate of how many credits will transfer; however, the student would need an Official Evaluation of their transcripts to know what specific course requirements would be needed.

Are there any specific types of courses or programs that don’t transfer, and how can students check before applying?

The transferability of a course depends on the accreditation an institution holds, and a Թ Global Enrollment Counselor can assist in checking the accreditation. Courses that do not transfer are any bachelor’s course with a grade of D+ or lower and any graduate course with a grade of C+ or lower. For bachelor students, developmental courses do not transfer as well as courses with an S, P, or CR grade in some circumstances. Every institution has a different course numbering system; therefore, what is determined to be developmental varies based on the institution attended.

For more information on evaluating transfer credits or to start your own evaluation, reach out to an Enrollment Counselor today.

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Artificial intelligence is a technology that can mimic human intelligence to solve problems, make decisions, and generate ideas. AI systems learn by processing enormous volumes of training data and identifying patterns.

This learning process allows the models to react in a human-like way to user prompts. For instance, processing example texts allows AI chatbots to have natural-sounding conversations with customers. Meanwhile, image recognition tools learn to identify picture subjects accurately by learning from examples.

The most common types of AI include:

  • Machine Learning: Machine learning programs use algorithms to analyze training data and learn from patterns and correlations, enabling them to perform specific tasks. A model improves with experience, so accuracy increases as it learns from past data.
  • Deep Learning: Deep learning networks have complex artificial neural networks, similar to a human brain. These networks can spot complex patterns and provide insightful responses. Therefore, they can tackle tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as reading medical images or identifying potential threats on satellite pictures.
  • Natural Language Processing: Natural language processing (NLP) is a type of machine learning that allows computer programs to understand and use human language. NLP programs train on vast quantities of natural language data to enable them to communicate in a human-like way.

While many of us associate artificial intelligence with Chat GPT, AI technologies are already embedded in many everyday tools. From checking your commute time on a web mapping platform like Google Maps to perfecting your grammar with text editing software, chances are you already use AI in your day-to-day life.

How AI is Shaping the Future of Work

The has exploded in recent years, and it’s likely to continue as more and more businesses embrace artificial intelligence solutions. The number of employers looking for AI-literate employees quadrupled between 2010 and 2019, and AI skills are becoming essential across a wide range of industries, making them a valuable asset for advancing your career and staying competitive in a rapidly evolving job market.

AI-related jobs typically pay 11% more than non-AI roles within the same company. Skills with AI are particularly useful if you plan to work in the information, professional services, administrative, or finance sectors.

AI adoption offers several potential benefits. It helps automate repetitive processes like data entry to improve operational efficiency. AI can also process and analyze large data sets rapidly, enabling it to identify patterns and make reasoned predictions to aid robust decision-making. For some businesses, using tools such as call bots and chatbots helps streamline customer interactions to boost engagement and satisfaction.

Numerous businesses have used AI to improve customer experiences and drive growth. For example, J.P. Morgan and Chase developed the award-winning to deliver accurate financial insights. The model can perform deep, comprehensive analyses of vast data sets, reducing operational costs and enabling faster solution development.

The Role of AI in Society

AI has the potential to automate non-routine tasks and solve some of the world’s most complex problems. For example, AI technologies can model climate change predictions, improve energy grid efficiency, and even help you reduce your household energy consumption through smart home heating systems. Other applications include analyzing data during clinical trials and optimizing journeys to reduce the load on transport infrastructure.

However, calculating the impact of AI on global challenges is complex, and even seemingly perfect solutions can have unintended outcomes. For instance, improving your home’s efficiency may encourage you to spend more time in your perfectly heated house, increasing your use of energy-hungry appliances.

Accounting for unforeseen effects is just one potential pitfall of relying on AI. Poor data protection practices increase the risk of privacy violations, while training models on biased data could lead to discrimination. This is why ethical practices are essential for responsible AI development.

Career Opportunities in AI

There are numerous AI-related career paths. AI engineers create tools and systems to solve real-life business problems, while data scientists answer crucial business-related questions by forecasting results. Alternatively, you could work as a machine learning engineer, working alongside data scientists to create models capable of analyzing large data sets.

Whichever route you take, you’ll need essential skills to thrive. High-demand skills include:

When you’re juggling work, school, and family obligations, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. If you don’t take steps to reduce stress, you may eventually, a state of physical, mental, or emotional exhaustion. Burnout causes a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, headaches, sleep disturbances, and appetite changes.

Fortunately, it’s possible to prevent burnout by using self-care to improve your overall well-being. Թ Global has an Employee and Student Assistance Program to help you access online counseling and other valuable resources. We’re also committed to helping students and staff members find qualified mental health professionals in their communities.

Understanding Burnout

One of the most common causes of burnout is a challenging workload. When the amount of work you have exceeds your personal capacity, it’s difficult to meet your obligations. Burnout is more likely if you have a challenging workload and additional stressors.

It’s also common to experience burnout if you feel like you lack control over your life. When you’re in control, you get to make decisions based on your individual needs and preferences. If you work for a micromanager or have to adjust your lifestyle to accommodate others, you may end up battling burnout at some point.

Finally, you may experience burnout if you have to tackle serious challenges without support from family members and friends. A strong support system reduces mental stress, reducing the risk of burnout.

Effects of Burnout

Burnout can have a major impact on your personal and professional lives. At work, burnout is likely to reduce your productivity, as mental and physical exhaustion makes it nearly impossible to keep up with assigned tasks. You may also find yourself avoiding certain job duties or isolating yourself from colleagues.

At home, burnout may cause you to avoid important responsibilities, such as helping your children with their homework or tending to the needs of an elderly parent. Another common sign of burnout is a loss of interest in self-care activities.

Signs and Symptoms of Burnout

Exhaustion is one of the most. You may also experience the following:

  • Pain
  • Digestive problems
  • Poor coping skills
  • Feelings of depression or sadness
  • Increased cynicism
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Reduced performance at work

Prioritizing Self-Care

To learn how to recover from burnout, you must get acquainted with the principles of self-care. In simple terms, self-care is any activity you do to maintain your physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental health.

Self-care offers several benefits for anyone who’s overwhelmed by the challenges of everyday life:

  • Improved physical health. Some types of self-care involve physical activity, giving you extra opportunities to strengthen your muscles or improve your balance.
  • Increased productivity. When you’re feeling burned out, it’s tough to focus. Taking time for self-care relieves some of the stress associated with burnout, allowing you to concentrate on your assignments.
  • Enhanced relationships. Burnout sometimes causes people to isolate themselves from loved ones, putting a strain on their most important relationships. Self-care reduces stress, making it more enjoyable to spend time with your friends and family members.
  • Better mental health. Because self-care reduces stress, it has the potential to, depression, and other mental health conditions.
  • Increased energy. Burnout saps your energy, leaving you feeling fatigued and overwhelmed. By reducing stress, self-care makes it possible to.

Effective Self-Care Strategies

Not everyone knows how to practice self-care without a little guidance. Whether you’re on the verge of burnout or already experiencing the symptoms, you may benefit from these strategies:

  • Exercise regularly. Exercise, which are feel-good chemicals that help relieve stress. Physical activity also strengthens your body, making it easier to perform many tasks.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. The food you eat, so improving your diet can have a major impact on mental health. If you have a chronic health condition, speak with a dietitian before you make dietary changes, as you may have to avoid certain foods.
  • Get plenty of sleep. Getting more rest can help you avoid the physical exhaustion that leads to burnout.
  • Try mindfulness and meditation. Mindfulness helps you focus on the present moment instead of worrying about other things, while meditation helps you clear your mind. Both techniques may help you in your quest to avoid burnout.
  • Write in a journal. Journaling gives you a chance to express your emotions instead of keeping them to yourself, giving you an outlet for your stress.
  • Maintain social connections. Maintaining social connections makes it easier to build that all-important support system.
  • Find a therapist. A licensed therapist can help you improve your coping skills and address some of the reasons why you’re prone to burnout.
  • Engage in your favorite hobbies. If you’re overwhelmed by work and family obligations, taking time for one of your hobbies gives you a chance to relax.
  • Manage your time wisely. Some people experience burnout because they take on too many tasks. Make sure you manage your time wisely to avoid stressful scheduling conflicts.
  • Use stress-reduction techniques. If you’re still battling stress, try deep breathing, yoga, or other stress-relief techniques.

Tips for Battling Burnout

If you’re experiencing burnout, learn to set boundaries and say no to unreasonable requests. You don’t need more tasks on your plate. It’s also helpful to create a supportive environment instead of trying to do everything alone. Թ Global’s success counselors are familiar with successful time management techniques and can help students create personalized study plans to stay on track to meet their academic goals — so tap into yours as needed for additional support.
